Starting a business isn’t all fun and games, and it can cause a lot of problems in the home especially. Your family may have no idea what owning your own business means and they may not see the bigger picture. Instead of alienating them and cutting them out of out of your life when things get hard, see if the two tips below can help you find a better balance between your new company and your family.
A Lack of Space
Is your house suddenly crowded because you’re trying to work from home? Don’t worry – it’s completely normal to suddenly find your house is half the size that it was yesterday. You may be squishing yourself into corners in the kitchen or in your baby’s bedroom, but ultimately, you’ll need a better solution. Consider finding an office space to rent or just head to a local coffee place for the time being. Get yourself a nice pumpkin spice latte and work on your laptop. It may not be the most private environment, but at least you’ll have some elbow room.
Your Family Expectations are Different than What Actually Happens
In all relationships, everyone should be open and honest about what's going on when they're sitting on a computer all day. Does your family know what you do when you sit down for four hours at a time? It's simple to fix this problem if they don't know: tell them! Have a family night and explain exactly what happens when you sit down on the computer. Letting it be a mystery can breed contempt and resentment among other family members. This is especially true when you're spending more time with the computer than you are with them. They begin to wonder if you care anymore - especially small children. Being honest and open about how much work you do every day will help your family understand that a) it's not permanent and b) you're working for them.
